A Holistic Approach to Education

At Montessori 3-6 Trilingual Preschool, we offer a carefully designed Montessori curriculum for children aged 2-6, fostering a love of learning, independence, and critical thinking. Inspired by Dr. Maria Montessori’s educational philosophy, our programme encourages each child to learn at their own pace in a nurturing and supportive environment. The curriculum is hands-on, engaging, and designed to ignite curiosity, build confidence, and develop the skills necessary for lifelong learning.

The Montessori method views the child as an active participant in their own learning process. Rather than being passive recipients of information, children are encouraged to explore, ask questions, and engage directly with materials and activities. Our teachers observe each child’s progress over time and provide guidance tailored to their individual needs, interests, and developmental stages.

Each child has 6 curriculum books so the team can record their observations, the Montessori Materials we introduce and assessments.  These 6 curriculum books are available to families to contribute to as well.

1. Practical Life & Social+Emotional Well Being

Practical Life activities are an essential part of the Montessori curriculum and help children develop life skills that promote independence, order, and responsibility. Children learn to care for themselves, their environment, and others through tasks such as pouring, sweeping, cleaning, and buttoning. These activities also support the development of fine motor skills, concentration, and self-discipline.

2. Sensorial & Maths

The Sensorial Materials allow children to explore and refine their senses. Montessori materials help children sequence, pair or order.  They have different sensory experiences with texture, colour, size, shape, and sound. Visual Discrimination develops through repetition with variety. Our teaching team introduce each material to our children over time and they are free to explore and repeat and work by themselves, in pairs or a group.

The Montessori approach to maths is based on hands-on exploration and concrete learning. Children use specially designed materials to understand mathematical concepts such as numbers, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. These materials allow children to visualize mathematical operations and develop a strong number sense, preparing them for more abstract mathematical thinking in later years.

3. Literacy & Culture

Language development is a core focus of our curriculum. In the Montessori environment, children learn to express themselves confidently through both spoken and written language. From early phonics activities to reading and writing, our materials support the development of literacy skills in a natural and engaging way. Storytelling, songs, and discussions also play a key role in expanding vocabulary and language comprehension.

5. Languages – Te Reo Māori, Spanish & Samoan

In our cultural studies program, children explore the world around them through geography, history, and science. Hands-on activities help children develop an understanding of different cultures, the environment, and the interconnectedness of all living things. This area encourages curiosity, global awareness, and a sense of respect for the world we live in.

6. Outdoor Environment

Our children learn in and through nature.  They learn to plant seeds, transplant seedlings, care for our plants in our outdoor environment and harvest vegetables, pick flowers and herbs.  Over time our children learn to appreciate and respect the Living World.  Outdoors our teaching team create individual goals for their Physical Development, their Social Development, their Sandname and areas they show interest in which may be learning to ride a trike or a bike, play cricket, soccer or basketball or make volcanoes in the sandpit.  We value indoor/outdoor flow in fine weather and learning outdoors.
